This is a list of all chain grocery locations my research has uncovered in Wheeling (including Benwood and McMechen) between 1926 and 2024, compiled from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. There may be some omissions due to incomplete or missing data, etc. and I welcome suggestions and corrections. Please read about my methodology for more information about what I do and do not include.

Notes:

• A good bit of renumbering happened here, mostly before 1934, and I have reflected this wherever possible.
• Wheeling suffered from significant population declines start8ing in the 1930s, which resulted in love chain penetration as well as many small co-op stores that lasted probably much longer than they would have in other cities.
• I hope to add data from the surrounding areas at some point, though it seems very spotty. I also don’t have access to newspaper archives from this area as a backup.
