Roanoke Chain Grocery/Supermarket Locations, 1920-2005

Roanoke has long been a Kroger town, ever since the company purchased the local Jamison Stores chain that also operated in parts of North Carolina, but A&P, Piggly Wiggly, Harris Teeter, Food World, Food Lion, Winn-Dixie, and others have landed here over the years, and the local Mick-or-Mack chain was a big deal for many years.

This is a list of all known chain grocery addresses in Roanoke, Salem, and Vinton between 1920 and 2005, complied from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. It is generated through a live Google Spreadsheet so it reflects the latest information I have. You may view the list in the frame below or open it in a new window, which will give you more viewing options and the ability to download it or add it to your own Google Drive.

  • There has been a significant amount of street renaming and renumbering in Roanoke over the past century. In many cases I was able to deduce the precise current address. In other cases, I had to estimate (as noted).
  • A&P locations from 1930 and 1935 are missing and will be added soon.
