Another of the several very old Kroger locations still operating in West Virginia. This one is in a town along the Kanawha River. It’s had some (rather unfortunate) remodeling, but is still obviously a 1950s vintage store.

This is the kind of supermarket I would love to shop in…no real frills, yes, it’s nice to pick up some fried chicken at the deli/bistro (as Ralphs , a Kroger subsidiary here in CA calls it in their Fresh Fare concept stores) but it’s not a necessity
This store was originally a Foodland. Kroger took over in the early 1990s, replacing the Kroger store in Montgomery, WVa. And that store was a bowling alley.
Pardon Me, but This was originally an Evans supermarket. The area where the store was built was a really nice place but most of the houses were moved (not torn down.) through-out the town. We had to move out of our home next to the Belcastros to make way for the parking lot for the store. Dad had just got a new ’57 Ford so this was probably late ’56. This was also before the back streets of Smithers were paved.
