Los Angeles Chain Grocery/Supermarket Locations, 1932-1942

Last updated on 2 July 2025.

This is a list of all chain grocery locations my research has uncovered in Los Angeles (including some San Fernando Valley locations) between 1932 and 1944, compiled from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. There may be some omissions due to incomplete or missing data, etc. and I welcome suggestions and corrections.

Please read about my methodology for more information about what I do and do not include.

Notes

  • The communities shown on this page are all located within the current city limits of Los Angeles, including the San Fenando Valley and Wilmington/San Pedro. Some locations currently inside the Los Angeles city limits are also included in the Santa Monica and LA County pages.
  • Due to a lack of comprehensive data sources, there will probably never be a complete location list for Los Angeles in the postwar years here.

Note about LA county listings

Unlike most smaller cities, there are basically no consistent and reliable sources for schain listings in Los Angeles County over time. The same is true of New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia. Please understand that the listings for most of Los Angeles County will always be largely incomplete.

Hi…..I grew up in Los Angeles Ca. in the 1950’s and 1960’s and started working for Safeway Stores Inc. in 1963
and I remember the number of old building that were 40 type safeways like the one on Olympic at Georgia, or 3rd and Bixel
7th and Lucas, and even worked in one that had been changed to an independent in 1967 located at 4919 Hollywood Blvd.
    Gordon’s Market
It was very amazing on how many stores that Safeway Stores Inc. had in the Los Angeles Area…I recoginized many of the
    locations

I am so suprised that Safeway Stores Inc. was so demolished after Peter McGowan son of Robert McGowan who had done so well for Safeway ( Robert ) that is
his son Peter really screwed Safeway Stores Inc. to the wall, because he had to own a Sports Team, what a total waste. He Ruined a GREAT COMPANY
