Worcester Chain Grocery/Supermarket Locations, 1940-2025

This is a list of all chain grocery locations my research has uncovered in the Worcester area between 1940 and 2025, compiled from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. There may be some omissions due to incomplete or missing data, etc. and I welcome suggestions and corrections.

Please read about my methodology for more information about what I do and do not include.

Notes

• I suspect there is some missing data, particularly on the suburban locations. I did not have access to newspapers to use as a cross-check for this one.
• Worcester directories prior to 1940 did not list individual store locations.
• For really good documentation (and photos) of Worcester stores, I strongly recommend checking out this section of The Market Report. (Thanks also for some very helpful clarifications on the Webster Plaza stores.)
• Apparently, Wonder Markets assumed the Big Discount branding in 1965 and shortened this to Big D at some later date, though the Wonder Markets name was also used as a “sub-brand” at some points. The chain was acquired by Golub/Price Chopper in 1995. Also the Sunderland store briefly operated as Big G but was forced to give up the name in a trademark suit. (Thanks to opacity.)
• The Pay’n Takit stores were not connected with the early Safeway-owned chain of the same name, but were under the same ownership as Community Stores, and were a much larger chain around 1930. (Thanks again to opacity.)
