This is a list of all chain grocery locations my research has uncovered in and around Rochester NY between 1925 and 2005, compiled from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. There may be some omissions due to incomplete or missing data, etc. and I welcome suggestions and corrections. Please read about my methodology for more information about what I do and do not include.
Access and download the location spreadsheet via Google Sheets.
Interesting notes:
- Hart’s stores began opening supermarkets under the Star Super Markets name in 1940. The first was at 685 South Avenue (in a former A&P). The two chains operated simultaneously until the late 1960s.
- Cities listed in the spreadsheet reflect the mailing address for Google Maps integration, so locations in Greece and Gates, for example, display as “Rochester.”
- I have tried to use the directional conventions currently in use, which is difficult in Rochester, so “North Clinton Avenue” but “Winton Road North.”
