This is a list of all chain grocery locations my research has uncovered in Greensboro between 1910 and 2015, compiled from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. Although some suburban locations may be included, it is not meant to cover all suburban stores in the area. There may be some omissions due to incomplete or missing data, etc. and I welcome suggestions and corrections. Please read about my methodology for more information about what I do and do not include.
View and download a copy of this location spreadsheet via Google Sheets.
Notes:
- The city directories from 2000 do not reflect the 1999 Kroger/Harris Teeter store swap, which occurred in June of that year.
- There may be missing and inaccurate locations from the Bi-Rite co-op.
Store tags:
- A&P
- Big Bear/Food World
- Bi-Lo
- Bi-Rite/Bestway/FoodRite
- Food Town/Food Lion

June 10, 2019 at 7:55pmI’m honored by a comment from the foremost authority on Greensboro history. Thanks!
It opened 19 August 1963 and had definitely closed by September of 1978, although I don’t know the exact date of closure.
You might find this interesting as well, if you didn’t see it before:

I did a presentation based on this post at Triad History Day at the Greensboro History Museum a few months ago.
