Introduction
Named for its position as the “high point” on a regional rail line, High Point is one of three cities — neighboring Greensboro and Winston-Salem are the others — making up the Piedmont Triad area of North Carolina. High Point is known as one of the top furniture producing cities in the US, and is home to a semi-annual furniture market which leads the industry.
Located in the same county as Greensboro, High Point has often been viewed as a “little sister” or even a suburb, but it is a fairly substantial city in its own right and at one point even made an ultimately unsuccessful move toward being the largest city in the county. At its core, High Point seems a rather gritty, working class place, but its recent suburban expansion compares to that of other sunbelt cities, and it now shares a border with Greensboro in some places. This section also includes listings for the adjacent towns of Archdale, Jamestown, and Thomasville.
