This is a list of all chain grocery locations my research has uncovered in Akron (including Barberton, Cuyahoga Falls, and Stow) between 1939 and 1980 compiled from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. There may be some omissions due to incomplete or missing data, etc. and I welcome suggestions and corrections. Please read about my methodology for more information about what I do and do not include.

Notes:

• This one was really challenging. The city directories were very much lacking so I had to rely very significantly on newspapers and other resources. There may be some omissions or “off” dates but I think it’s pretty solid given all the issues. I spent much longer than usual on this one.
• Loblaws (a/k/a Del Farm) left Akron in 1972, A&P in 1979, and Kroger in 1984.
