This is a list of all chain grocery locations my research has uncovered in Rockford between 1920 and 2025, compiled from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. There may be some omissions due to incomplete or missing data, etc. and I welcome suggestions and corrections. Please read about my methodology for more information about what I do and do not include.

Notes:
- John Logli founded the Pacemaker co-op chain in 1951. There were other Logli-named stores (other family members?) in the 1930s and 1940s, but the genesis of the chain seems to have been Logli’s Finer Foods on Kishwaukee and later Broadway.
- Catrogiovanni Bros/Sanitary Meat Market (forerunner of Hilander) was apparently founded in 1919. As far as I can tell, they were operating the meat market in what was probably National Tea’s first Rockford supermarket location (2217 E. State St.) and eventually established their first Hilander supermarket in that location when National closed.
- Kroger seems to have been in and out of the area three times, twice under its own name and once with the purchase of the HIlander chain in 1998.
- Schnucks purchased the Logli chain in 1998 and Hilander in 2011. As far as I can tell, the stores from both chains were not rebranded until 2012 or 2013.
