This is a list of all chain grocery locations my research has uncovered in Portland between 1925 and 2015, compiled from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. There may be some omissions due to incomplete or missing data, etc. and I welcome suggestions and corrections. Please read about my methodology for more information about what I do and do not include.

Notes:
- The George Shaw stores became Shaw’s Suermarkets.
- The early listing for Hannaford Brothers refers to their wholesale operation, which supplied Red & White franchisees throughout Maine. I’m not 100% certain how their retail operations, which apparently began in 1944, were originally branded. This may be data that is not included here because it was displayed elsewhere in the directory, or these may be some of the Red & White stores that are not co-branded.
- Apparently, no Portland city directories were published between 1967 and 1988. The intervening years were pieced together using newspaper ads and there may be some omissions.
Store tags:
- A&P
- First National/Finast
- Hannaford
- IGA
- Martin’s Shop ‘n Save
