This is a list of all chain grocery locations my research has uncovered in several Maryland suburbs of Washington DC (including College Park, Hyattsville, Laurel, Rockville, Silver Spring and Takoma Park) between 1953 and 1973, compiled from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. There may be some omissions due to incomplete or missing data, etc. and I welcome suggestions and corrections.

Notes:
- The earliest Food Fair locations, listed here as “Food Fair (GU)” were not connected to the better-known national chain and were acquired by Grand Union in 1955. The better known Food Fair chain initially operated in this area as “Food Lane” and rebranded as Food Fair at the same time. The two chains came to an agreement in 1958 and the older Food Fair stores became Grand Union while the Food Lane stores became Food Fair.
