Muskegon Chain Grocery/Supermarket Locations, 1930-1997 and 2019

This is a list of all known chain grocery addresses in Muskegon between 1930 and 1997, compiled from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. It is generated through a live Google Spreadsheet so it reflects the latest information I have.

Access and download the location spreadsheet via Google Sheets.

Notes:

  • Grand Rapids-based Eberhard apparently bought out Hasper’s Sav-Mor in the early 1960s.
  • One particularly interesting store is 530 Whitehall, which opened as Plumb’s, became a Kroger between 1965 and 1970, was eventually expanded into a superstore, and then reverted to Plumb’s when Kroger pulled out in the early 1980s. Plumb’s went bankrupt in 2017.
  • Several streets that extend from Muskegon into Muskegon Heights were renumbered to create a consistent address grid in the early 1950s. Addresses in the spreadsheet reflect the current numbering, though some are estimates as noted.
  • Several Meijer stores opened after 1989 and may have been present in 1990 and 1997 but are not represented in the listings.
