This is a list of all chain grocery locations my research has uncovered in Muskegon between 1930 and 1997, compiled from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. There may be some omissions due to incomplete or missing data, etc. and I welcome suggestions and corrections. Please read about my methodology for more information about what I do and do not include.
Notes
- Grand Rapids-based Eberhard apparently bought out Hasper’s Sav-Mor in the early 1960s.
- One particularly interesting store is 530 Whitehall, which opened as Plumb’s, became a Kroger between 1965 and 1970, was eventually expanded into a superstore, and then reverted to Plumb’s when Kroger pulled out in the early 1980s. Plumb’s went bankrupt in 2017.
- Several streets that extend from Muskegon into Muskegon Heights were renumbered to create a consistent address grid in the early 1950s. Addresses in the spreadsheet reflect the current numbering, though some are estimates as noted.
- Several Meijer stores opened after 1989 and may have been present in 1990 and 1997 but are not represented in the listings.

Delivered NABISCO cookies & crackers to all the above for 38 years except to BERGLUNDS.Sadly observed several dedicated store managers from A&P and KROGER who were given so much pressure from higher Managment they chose to resign before their eligibility for pensions.And obviously that was their motive.NATIONAL BISCUIT CO was a large global company but they treated their employees regardless of position or age very well.
I worked for Haspers E Market on Broadway from June 1967 until about June 1968, then transferred to 1300 E. Laketon until September 1969. Mr. Hasper was still running the company at that time, although affiliated with Eberhards. When I returned from a four year stint in October 1973, the remaining Hasper stores had become Eberhards, under L.V. Eberhard. There were five stores in Muskegon at that time, 1300 Laketon, 3500 block Henry, 1970 Henry, 4218 Grand Haven Road, and a smaller store in North Muskegon, which later was torn down and a much larger store was opened. I personally worked at the small North Muskegon store, 1970 Henry, 1300 Laketon, and 4218 Grand Haven Road.
