Washington DC Chain Grocery/Supermarket Locations, 1925-1975

This is a list of all chain grocery locations my research has uncovered in Washington between 1925 and 1975, compiled from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. There may be some omissions due to incomplete or missing data, etc. and I welcome suggestions and corrections. Please read about my methodology for more information about what I do and do not include.

View and download a copy of this location spreadsheet via Google Sheets.

Note: The 1975 listings are incomplete due to missing information in the city directory.

This list omits the Griffin Grocery Store owned by my great uncle Homer Griffin. The store address was 4410 Deane Avenue (now N.H. Burroughs). The former store front can still be seen today.

Thanks for the information. I only research chains, as the page description says. Listing every independent store would involve tens of thousands of names, so that probably won’t happen. But it’s always good to hear about interesting stores!
