H.C. Bohack

Updated 30 April 2025 (Originally published 15 April 2009)

One-time New York City chain H.C. Bohack was one of two chains whose majority stockholder at least through the 1950s was National Food Products (the other was Colonial Stores in the southeastern US). Bohack began having problems in the 1970s. After an unsuccessful merger attempt with Shopwell in 1974, the stores finally went under in 1977, when 55 of the 59 units were closed, with the remainder staying open as closeout locations.

A Manhattan Bohack store (2 Av. at 86 St.) was featured in the 1968 film “The Odd Couple.”

Is there a grocery group or museaum that accepts old grocery store memorabilia? I have two wooden Bohack crates used in the 1950s with the name of the store and item numbers painted on the front and side and am trying to find a place for them.
