Hamilton (Ontario) Chain Grocery/Supermarket Locations, 1925-2018

This is a list of all known chain grocery addresses in Hamilton between 1925 and 2018, compiled from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. It is generated through a live Google Spreadsheet so it reflects the latest information I have.

Notes:

  • As is the case for most cities in Southern Ontario, the 1970-2000 city directories for Hamilton do not contain classified listings, so the address list is likely somewhat incomplete for those years. This would apply primarily to franchises (IGA, No Frills, Mr Grocer, etc.) that might be alphabetized under the owner’s name, but might also have led me to miss certain chains.
  • There also seem to be inaccuracies/omissions in the later directories. I hope to confirm some of these on my next trip north.

Access and download the location spreadsheet via Google Sheets.

Store tags:

  • A&P/Food Basics
  • Carroll’s/Grand Union
  • Dominion
  • IGA
  • Loblaws/Fortinos/No Frills
  • Metro
  • Sobeys/Price Chopper/FreshCo
  • Steinberg/Miracle (Food) Mart/Ultra

930 Upper Paradise never existed as a Metro. The location closed as The Barn prior to the Metro conversions. This link from the Hamilton Spectator claims it closed in 2002.

However Google Street Maps still shows it there in 2007. In 2009 (the year of the Metro conversions), it is shown as a Home and Patio store. No Frills opened sometime in late 2014, early 2015.

The 70 Hess St N location of The Barn would have closed much earlier than 2010 as well. First of all, The Barn (as a chain) ceased to exist the year prior. This location was not a Metro. As well, the aforementioned article above listed it as closing in 2002.

All Metro conversions in Hamilton were from Barn locations. (with the exception of a lone A&P location in Dundas, which is not included in the spreadsheet). I’m not sure at what point the locations were flipped from Superfresh to The Barn. The link makes mention 5 former Superfresh & Miracle Food Mart locations switched in 2001 to The Barn. I would place money on 1900 King St E and 751 Upper James St., as the other former Miracle locations that switched. The other locations on Mohawk and Queenston became Food Basics, as per your spreadsheet.

The FoodBasics at King and Paradise: Google Streetview has it as The Barn at about 2007, a Metro afterwards, then a FoodBasics afterward. Was that an A&P originally?
